On August 2nd, 2021, Officer A F White was dispatched to the scene of an accident at the intersection of Powers Ferry Road and Winterset Parkway.
The accident occurred at 18:14.
Ms. P Nelson was driving a Kia Forte LX and Mr. D Fernandes was driving a BMW S1000 R motorcycle.
Ms. Nelson stated that she was traveling on Winterset Parkway, waiting to turn left at the intersection onto Powers Ferry Road northbound
She checked both lanes of travel which were clear of traffic, and she began to turn left.
As she was crossing Powers Ferry Road, she saw Mr. Fernandes approaching at a high rate of speed.
Ms. Nelson was unable to avoid a collision and Mr. Fernandes’ vehicle collided with the left side of her vehicle.
The officer reported that Mr. Fernandes was losing and regaining consciousness and was bleeding from the head. He was transported to the Emergency Room at Kennestone Hospital.
When he was able to speak, Mr. Fernandes stated in Portuguese to Officer Costa who speaks the language, that he was traveling southbound on Powers Ferry Road and intended to turn right into Delk Road westbound.
Mr. Fernandes further stated that he was traveling within the speed limit in the right #2 straight lane near the intersection of Winterset Parkway when Ms. Nelson’s vehicle pulled out in front of him, and he was unable to avoid a collision.
The officer noted that a crest in the road slightly obscures sight of the intersection.
Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were removed by Marietta Wrecker.
Ms. Nelson was cited in terms of O.C.G.A. 40-6-73 “Failure to yield when entering/crossing a roadway”.
The weather was cloudy, and the surface conditions and light conditions were good.
The accident was reported in Cobb County.
